Does a Bay Window Add Value to a Home?
When it comes to home improvement, small changes can make a big difference. One of the most impactful upgrades you can make is replacing old doors with new windows, and that's precisely what our recent project in Lincoln University, Pennsylvania, was all about. Our customer wanted to breathe new life into their home by replacing two patio doors that were no longer in use with beautiful bay windows. The result? A brighter, more spacious living area that truly transformed their living space.

The Process

At the start of the project, our team carefully removed the patio doors one by one and framed up the openings to prepare for the installation of the new windows. This step allowed us to optimize the wall space internally, which was a game-changer in terms of usability and design.

Next, we installed the bay window in the second opening, ensuring a seamless fit. We used top-quality materials, including installation, sheathing, and Tyvek on the outside, to ensure the windows were secure and energy-efficient. With the window set in place, we finished wrapping up the exterior, adding both durability and an aesthetically pleasing finish.

Innovative Features

To add functionality and style to the bay window, we incorporated a flip-up seat in the middle, providing valuable storage space underneath. We constructed the seat using plywood, which we skillfully painted to match the interior's design. The seat's hinge system was designed with simplicity and practicality in mind, using a piano hinge for smooth movement.

Additionally, in another room, we removed a door and installed a stud wall with proper insulation, taking care of every detail to ensure a seamless transition and a consistent look throughout the house.

Siding and Aesthetics

We made sure to maintain a cohesive look by matching the shingles from the roof and placing them on the bay window. For the siding, we selected a savannah wicker color, which harmonized with the existing siding, although there might be a slight difference due to fading. The chosen siding style, Brentwood, was an ideal alternative to the discontinued original, and it still added a touch of elegance to the home's exterior.

The Final Touch

The finished bay window not only added depth and dimension to the rooms but also significantly improved the usability of the living space. The removal of the patio doors allowed for more wall space, making it possible for the homeowners to place furniture, such as a couch, against the wall.

Furthermore, our careful design approach, incorporating a soffit design with vertical siding underneath the window, resulted in a sleek and polished appearance. We made sure that the transition between the old and new siding was seamless, so the two floors blended beautifully together.
